The Witch’s Ladder is a unique magical tool made of natural materials and used in spell work to manifest a witch’s desired intention. The oldest known witch’s ladder dates back to Victorian times and since, they have become a popular tool in many veins of folk magic. Beginning after the practitioner has set her intention, the creation of a witch’s ladder starts with a length of cord made of a natural material, into which nine goose or crow feathers are tied at regular intervals. Sometimes other natural trinkets are tied into the cord or the quantity of feathers may be changed, all in accordance with what best reflects the witch’s desire. Knot magic is utilized in the creation process with each knot tied being a symbolic act of sealing the practitioner’s will. At the end of the cord is tied a hag-stone, or wishing stone, being a stone that bears a natural hole into which requests can be made to spirits and the otherworldly powers. This stone completes the Witch’s Ladder and it is now ready to be used in spell work. A dish of hot coals is set on the floor with smoldering incense and offerings placed atop. The practitioner then dangles the talisman over the coals, slowly swinging it back and forth through the smoke while reciting her spell. As the smoke rises through the “rungs,” so too does the witch’s power and the manifestation of her will. From the very onset of creating the Witch’s Ladder to the very last wisp of rising smoke, the witch must remain focused on her goal, channeling all of her power into each step of the process in order to manifest her desired intention.
